C’est l’automne. Maria, une femme d’une cinquantaine d’années, est retrouvée pendue dans son chalet d’été sur les bords du lac du Thingvellir par Karen, sa meilleure amie. Aussi dubitatif que réticent, Erlendur lui promet d’écouter l’enregistrement tout en lui répétant que ni l’enquête ni l’autopsie n’ont décelé le moindre élément suspect. L’audition de la cassette le convainc cependant de reprendre l’investigation à l’insu de tous. Il découvre que l’époux de Maria a eu un passé agité, qu’il a une liaison avec l’une de ses anciennes amours, qu’il est endetté et que Maria possédait une vraie fortune. Une intrigue parallèle nous raconte l’histoire d’un jeune couple disparu lors d’une promenade sur le lac. Et nous avons enfin des informations sur la nature des relations d’Erlendur avec son ex-épouse, Halldora.

Le thème sous-jacent de ce roman est la question de la validité des histoires de fantômes dont les Islandais, souvent, n’excluent pas l’existence. Il pose aussi la question du deuil, un thème transversal dans l’oeuvre d’Indriðason.
